It's a new dawn, it's a new day....

Thu 1st Feb 2018

2015 marked the dawning of an exciting new era at Bolton Lads & Girls Club (BLGC) and the theme has continued throughout the last 3 years.

In April, the sod-cutting ceremony marked a special day in the history of BLGC as it signalled the beginning of work on a new £1.7 million project to improve facilities at Hacken Lane. The building of a new pavilion will encompass four changing rooms with segregated shower and toilet facilities, a disabled changing room and two smaller changing rooms with showers for two match officials and it will also have a full size 3G pitch installed with floodlights. The development will also include a new parking facility and overflow car park addressing existing parking issues and accommodating the expected increase in users.

This project has been a personal mission for Michael Peers, Chief Executive of Harry Peers and Vice-Chairman at BLGC and is also a dream come true for supporters of BLGC and the estimated 3000 young people between the ages of eight to twenty one who use the club every week. The club will also be able to expand the range of sports offered at the facility to include hockey, cricket and rounders. †Michael commented,

"It means we can offer other people around Bolton the chance to use our pitches on a commercial basis too. We can engage with our local community and it too means we will not be affected by the weather."

Work commenced on the project in May and by October, the scaffolding was removed on the new pavilion and external brickwork completed with utilities soon to be installed. With regards to the 3G pitch, the topsoil covering the full footprint of the pitch had been removed, with the stone base in place and preliminary works undertaken on the spectator area.

Despite the monsoon style of weather we've experienced during November, the building work continues to progress, with the green astro turf carpet now taking up position on the 3G pitch which is no doubt visible to all who wander down Hacken Lane! †In addition, the fencing and gating around the new car parking area has been erected which will benefit both the club and the neighbouring Indians Sports Club. With internal fittings and floor coverings now in place and sporting none other than the club's colours of blue and white, it's all systems go leading up to Christmas.

The anticipation of the club's transformation has created a real buzz in the (wet) Bolton air with local people genuinely excited and proud to see the opportunities that the new facility will bring to the area.

Here's to a wonderful Christmas and an even better new year as the new facility at Hacken Lane opens its glorious new doors to a local community waiting with bated breath to be the first to try out the top class sports facilities and indulge in the beautiful game!
