Launching dreams at BLGC

Wed 8th Jun 2016

The dream was to give the young people of Bolton and surrounding areas an inspiring sports ground to enthuse and encourage a new generation to achieve and excel in a multitude of sports. The task was to raise sufficient funds to build a state of the art sports facility and a full size floodlit 3G football and multi sports pitch for Bolton Lads and Girls club (BLGC).

Michael Peers, former Chairman of BLGC pledged to raise sufficient funds to successfully complete this Project however, raising just under 2 million took longer than Michael had originally planned. Following months of intense fundraising and hard work from the dedicated Team, that phenomenal dream became a reality.

On 12th April 2016 the star studded official opening of the fantastic new facility took place and the cutting of the ribbon was made by former Bolton player and Manager Sam Allardyce and Liverpool legend and TV pundit Mark Lawrenson. The latter commented,

"It is incredibly important that there are proper facilities in grassroots football to allow for more young players to break into the professional game."

Michael agreed and continued,

"We are very grateful to the Premier League and the FA Facilities Fund for allowing us to continue to provide the best sports facilities for young people and the wider community and to strengthen grass roots sport in the borough."

The Mayor of Bolton was also in attendance in addition to 200 others including many financial supporters who had given generously and were keen to see the incredible results and join in the celebrations.

Harry Peers Steelwork have been Premier Patrons for many years and all at the Company are regularly involved in fund raising events for the Club such as sporting challenges and the ever popular cake and coffee mornings. In fact, a team of willing volunteers from Peers took part in a 5-a-side corporate football tournament at the new facility just last week. Although not impressed with the results of the Peers Team (quarter semi-finals) they were delighted at the opportunity to experience the state of the art facility first hand.

Congratulations to all involved in the Project and we look forward to watching the rise of tomorrow's sporting heroes who can boast that they began their journey at BLGC and what a wonderful legacy that will be for the Club and the people of Bolton.
