Victory in Vienna!

Thu 30th Nov 2017

It was a nail biting wait for the final scores for Design Manager Chris Achilles, in his new role representing his country at billiards in the 2017/18 Four Nations International Tournament in Vienna last week.

Chris was determined to give the performance of his life for his debut wearing the England cap and tensions were running high as his team mates were intent on beating last year's winner Northern Ireland and bring the trophy home.

After a day of solid playing from all camps on the Saturday, the day of reckoning arrived on Sunday with England leading 25 points to Northern Ireland's 19, and Austria and the Republic of Ireland tied on 14 points.

The final was an intense day of playing for all involved, but particularly for some of the England players whose travel arrangements meant they had to depart early for the airport prior to the end of the tournament. Chris recounts making frenzied calls from the airport to desperately find out if they had done enough to win the cup!

A strong last session win of 7-1 on the first day saw England move clear by 6 points however by the last session of the match, England saw their lead reduced to a mere two points over holders Northern Ireland. Chris and his team mates needn't have feared, as an impressive clean sweep of 8 points in that session saw the team home to reclaim the four nation's trophy by a margin of 10 points.

England's final total was 51 points, 10 clear of previous winners Northern Ireland (41 points) who had given them a good run for their money. Republic of Ireland and Austria tied on 26 points.

The unbeaten Chris Taylor and Rob Hall were top points scorers, with Mark Graham, Gary Norman and Steve Crosland dropping only a single game each, debutants Adam Clarke and Peers' own Chris Achilles backed up back by veteran Eddie Fielding all made solid contributions to a good team win.

Chris was delighted to have won 3 of his 6 matches and to have taken part and successfully contributed to the winning of the cup for his country.

Next up, Chris and his team mates are off to Belfast in January.
