Harry Peers Steelwork have a proud and established record in recognition of commitment to Health & Safety.

The Gold award in the RoSPA Occupational Health and Safety Awards 2015 was presented to Bernice Peers, SHE Advisor in a ceremony at the Hilton Birmingham Metropole Hotel, in July of this year.

David Rawlins, RoSPA's Awards Manager, commented, "The RoSPA Awards encourage improvement in occupational health and safety management. Organisations that gain recognition for their health and safety management systems, such as Harry Peers Steelwork Limited, contribute to raising standards overall and we congratulate them."

Harry Peers were also awarded an International Safety Award with merit by the British Safety Council, which is given to organisations in recognition of their proven commitment to workplace health and safety.

Lynda Armstrong OBE, Chair of the Trustees of the British Safety Council commented,

"We congratulate all of the winning organisations on the awards they have received which are in recognition of their commitment and efforts to keep their employees and workplaces healthy and safe. Across all of the winning organisations are examples of the dedication and hard work to ensure that the risk of injury and ill health is prevented."

Harry Peers were delighted to receive an award at the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority (NDA) Estate Supply Chain Awards for Best example of innovation by an SME.

The highly commended award was for a Temporary Construction Access Openings (TCAO) submission. Chris Achilles, head of Peers' Design Team explained that Peers were challenged with providing temporary weather protection to 5 large cell rooms during the construction process. The covers needed to be easily taken down and reinstated to allow for multiple key kit installation dates with extremely tight time slots. The final design was similar to that seen on the side of a conventional side loading wagon but using much more heavy duty materials. For more details please refer to the Design Best Practice website www.dbp.org.uk

Chris' contribution was also recognised by way of a double award from ECIA. The first was a highly commended RISE (Recognising Initiative in Safety Excellence) award for an individual contribution and the second was a Safe Working Award in recognition of our safety record during the year.

Chris' motto is 'build easily and safely' and modularise wherever possible. Constructing offsite and involving minimum numbers of people reduces the risk of accidents, an ideal that is encouraged by Bernice Peers.

Chris, who has produced designs which include reducing working at height and reducing hand arm vibration, has been an active member of Design Best Practice (DBP) for 10 years. The DBP website has recently received an excellent endorsement from the HSE for promoting safety in design. Chris' Design Team have won many awards from DBP including for the best submission with the Trailer Access Platform Initiative and also for their Modular Pipe rack case study.

Safety at site level is of the utmost importance and any individual who goes the extra mile to preventing an incident deserves to be recognised.  Congratulations therefore went to Stephen Tyldesley, steel erector at the Duro Felguera Carrington site near Manchester for being actively safety conscious with a positive result all round.

Stephen highlighted a potentially dangerous situation involving the positioning of a crane on site. By voicing his concerns, Stephen has improved safe working practices and even prevented a potential incident on site. This theme was continued by Site Foreman Peter Brown at the same site who won not one but two safety recognition awards and Daren Jackson who highlighted an exposed opening on site which could have led to a fall from height had action not been taken, was also in receipt of a safety award on the Carrington Site.

Finally, not forgetting Supervisor Tony Speakman who won a Supervisors Safety Award for demonstrating observable behaviour beyond minimum compliance to Health & Safety also on the Duro Felguera site.

Harry Peers are delighted to have been recognised and awarded for our continual commitment to achieving the highest standards in Health and Safety.
